  • A pinch of turmeric

  • 1/2 cup fresh turkey berries (sundakkai)

  • Leave stem behind the berries

  • Wash thoroughly and keep aside


For Sambar:

  • 1 small lemon-sized tamarind (soaked in warm water)

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1/2 tsp sambar powder

  • 1/2 tsp jaggery (optional)

  • Salt to taste

For Tempering:

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 2 dry red chilies

  • A pinch of hing (asafoetida)

  • 1 sprig curry leaves

  • 2 tsp oil (cooking oil)

Optional Additions:

  • 1 chopped onion

  • 1 chopped tomato

  • Coriander leaves for garnish


Instructions:

Step 1: Cook the Dal

  • Rinse toor dal thoroughly.

  • Pressure cook it with water and turmeric until soft and mushy.

  • Mash well and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Turkey Berries

  • Slightly crush each turkey berry using a stone or rolling pin.

  • Heat oil in a small pan, add  chopped onion , tomato,

              turkey berries with a pinch of salt.

  • Sauté for 5–6 minutes until they shrink and slightly brown.

  • Set aside.

Step 3: Make the Tamarind Base

  • Extract thick tamarind juice from the soaked tamarind.

  • Boil the juice with turmeric, sambar powder, salt, and jaggery for 8–10 minutes.

Step 4: Combine Everything

  • Add the cooked turkey berries and mashed dal to the tamarind mixture.

  • Let it simmer for 10 minutes, adjusting water as needed.

Step 5: Temper the Sambar

  • Heat oil in a small pan, add mustard, cumin, red chilies, hing, and curry leaves.

  • Pour the tempering into the sambar and mix well.

Step 6: Garnish and Serve

  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

  • Serve hot with steamed rice, dosa, or idli.
